W.S. Goodrich

The roots of W.S. Goodrich run deep in Epping, beginning in 1887 when Willie S. Goodrich constructed a brick manufacturing plant capable of producing 6 million bricks per year. Manufacturing continued for 89 years, through 2 world wars and the Great Depression.

Goodrich brick can be seen on such projects as the Museum of Science in Boston, the library at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Faneuil Hall in Boston and many buildings at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

Third generation owner Dexter Goodrich had the foresight to add the sale of stone and masonry supplies to the company mix. Fourth generation owners, Bob and Dave, have continued to expand and improve the business, while staying true to the principals that have kept the company in business for 122 years: Provide the best customer service possible while selling the highest quality product available.

Fabrication of granite and marble was added in the 1980s, and in 2007, a beautiful new showroom was built, showcasing many of the products we sell in and indoor setting. So, if you’re looking for masonry supplies, a new patio or walkway, a stone wall or even granite countertops, think of W.S. Goodrich!

ATA Karate Center of Candia

In August of 2007, Dean and Valerie Page opened ATA Karate Center of Candia and their martial arts academy continues to grow with a steady membership. Exciting Martial Arts Programs are offered for ages 3 to adult. They also offer: Leadership Training, Private Lessons, Birthday Parties, Child Safety Seminars, A Pro-Shop, Regional and National Tournaments, and Family Classes for families that would enjoy training together.

In addition to the physical training, ATA Karate Center has a strong emphasis on lifeskills - teaching children how to be courteous, respectful, and disciplined in their classes as well as at home and school. It is also our desire to build confidence in each student and help them achieve success in every area of their lives.

What makes martial arts unique to other sports is the way in which students are taught a combination of moves and are expected to be able to perform those moves on both sides of their bodies. Using the non-dominant side of their brain forces that side to develop. This challenges students in a way that no other sport will. The result is a more focused student, and often they will start excelling in other areas of their lives. Parents are always pleased when they see their children bringing home better grades.

If you would like to request a copy of our schedule of classes, please email candiaata@verizon.net. You may also call 483-5200 for more information, or to set up an introductory lesson.

ATA Karate Center of Candia is part of the American Taekwondo Association's national network of about 2,000 martial arts academies. For more information about ATA you may visit ataonline.com.

Bodywise Physical Therapy

Bodywise Physical Therapy is an outpatient practice conveniently located in the Knightly Plaza in No. Epping at the intersection of Route 125 and Route 155 (629 Calef Highway). The clinic location provides excellent access to patients with ample parking.

Bodywise is a 2,000 square foot, state of the art clinic that opened in January 2007. It is owned by Karen and Ryan Poplaski, a husband and wife physical therapy team.

In a recent survey of past patients, 100% of patients would recommend Bodywise to a family member and 100% were satisfied with their therapy. This is due to an emphasis on one-on-one treatment provided by physical therapists only, resulting in a higher quality of care for the patient. This leads to a positive patient experience and excellent therapist-to-physician communication.

Whether it’s your first experience with physical therapy or a familiar routine, you’ll find a comfortable environment where the focus is on your individual needs. We specialize in treatment for all acute and chronic injuries to the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee and foot/ankle.

The office is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M. Please visit the Bodywise website at www.BodywiseNH.com to learn more about the clinic and read patient testimonials. You may also contact the office for an appointment or more information at 603-679-8100.

A Better Way To Health

“Hi, how are you?”

“I’m fine.” “I’m great.” “I’m doing well.” The truth is that we may not actually be great or even fine. After a shot of truth serum, the responses would probably sound more like this: “I’m depressed.” “I’m constipated.” “I’m too fat.” Most of us are suffering with issues that seem so common or embarrassing that we just don’t deal with them. Many of these simple problems are at the root of many other health concerns. Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? In 1998, I started selling natural health supplements after experiencing great results and simple solutions to some nagging and common health issues and I’ve found that many people have experienced the same beneficial results.

In 1999, my family moved from Big Bear Lake, California to Epping New Hampshire where I have continued studying, consulting and selling natural health supplements worldwide via the phone and my web site www.ABetterWay2Health.com. I hope to help people understand that there is a better way to health. It involves simple basic principles. Eliminate toxins and poor habits. Nourish the body with whole foods and clean water. Get exercise and rest. Replenish crucial nutrients depleted by stress, genetic conditions, disease, athletic activity, etc.

My degree in Animal Science offered a variety of courses in nutrition, chemistry and other sciences which have turned out to be a good foundation for my business. (Animal Science is the study of raising animals for the food industry). I have since enjoyed reading many books and articles about everything from diet to hormone balance and over the years I’ve learned so much from reading, watching, listening and experiencing many natural and healthy ideas. I’ve studied herbology books, Chinese medicine ideas, raw vegetarian programs…I even tried living the vegan lifestyle, thinking that there must be a better way to health.

Last November I expanded my business to include vending machines from Yo Naturals. My “YoZone” machines are placed free in schools and businesses that care about offering healthier alternatives for snacks and drinks. These machines not only offer healthy snacks, but also offer a great fund raising opportunity, paying a percentage of the sales back to the organization. Some of the more popular natural snacks offered in a YoZone vending machine are Pirates Booty cheese puffs, Clif Energy Bars, protein rich Builder Bars, Luna Bars for women, all natural Dirty Potato Chips, Honest Kids flavored water drinks, low calorie Pop Chips, kids Crayon juices, organic iced coffees, natural cookies and much more. Items in a YoZone machine are free of hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artifical colors and sweeteners.

I hope you are truly well. If not, there is a better way to health. Amy Houston, owner A Better Way To Health LLC, Epping, NH. 603-679-9595 888-504-2623 www.ABetterWay2Health.com

Holy Grail Food & Spirits

“Where your quest for great food ends”

In May of 2008, David and Maureen Kennedy opened the Holy Grail in Epping. The old St. Joseph’s Church was built in 1895-1896 by William J. O’Connor and was established as a Parish in 1898. In simpler times long past, this new structure served the local residents as a gathering place to worship, to meet people, listen to music and socialize among friends and family.

Today, 112 years later, the same basic structure has been reborn into one of the Seacoast’s Premiere restaurants by the Kennedy family. The Holy Grail Food & Spirits will strive to be a pub in the truest sense of the word. They have combined present day ideas while preserving the same family values of their past Irish heritage. David’s family roots originate from County Tipperary, and Maureen’s family from County Galway Ireland. The “Cottage Room” resembles the home of Maureen’s grandparents on Joyce Mountain located down the road from James Joyce, the famous Irish author and poet. The “Choir Loft” area will serve as an intimate dining experience overlooking the Main Bar and Irish village mural displayed high on the Altar wall. Pew-like booths line the walls with exceptional views of the original Stain-glass windows. Authentic Irish/English cuisine will enhance the guests overall dining experience.

We would like to thank you for joining our family for a hearty meal, a refreshing beverage and interesting conversation. Hopefully, you will return often and become part of our new family. The Holy Grail is located at 64 Main Street in Epping, across from the Post Office. We are currently open Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. serving food until 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 midnight serving food until 10:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Please call: 679-9559 or visit our website at: www.theholygrailpub.com for more information. If you are looking for something that is very different in dining, your quest is over!

Zampa

Conveniently situated at the crossroads of Routes 125 and 27, Zampa proudly anchors one of these corners standing 7 years as an independent Mom & Pop (non-chain) run restaurant.

Proprietors and husband and wife Epping residents, Cory McPhee and Julie Di Tursi, are passionate about what they do, and enthusiastic about the space and food they bring to our community. Zampa has added to Epping’s character as “The Center of the Universe” being noted by foodies and critics as a “hidden jewel” and proudly earned recognition in Portsmouth Magazine’s top 20 Seacoast restaurants (Newburyport to Ogunquit) for 2 consecutive years ranking 9th and 14th.

Zampa offers dinner 6 nights per week (Monday – Saturday). The eclectic cuisine is heavily inspired by Julie’s Italian roots and the couple’s love for Creole and Cajun flavors of the city of New Orleans where Cory earned much of his restaurant experience including his employment with several New Orleans dining institutions including Emeril Lagase’s first restaurant in the mid 90’s.

From Nantucket sea scallops to pork saltimbocca and a grilled Angus ribeye steak, Zampa also offers superior quality American staples including burgers (as well as homemade veggie burgers and lamb burgers made from lamb from Epping’s Riverslea Farm). Other favorites are homemade pasta dishes and the award winning Sloppy Joe. The pommes frites (hand cut fried potatoes) are not to be missed.

Julie and Cory are avid supporters of independent local businesses and sustainable agriculture. It is clear in the menu and beverage selection where Squamscott soda is the house fountain drink and the majority of produce, meats, dairy and fish are sourced from farms in New England and as local as Epping.

Zampa has coined the phrase “blue jean fine dining” which describes this cozy 60-seat restaurant, making the perfect environment for a casual evening any time or perfect for the special occasion. Come as you are. Reservations on weekends are recommended.

For more details about your neighborhood bistro, go to www.zampa.com. Off site and pick-up catering services are also available. 603.679.8772. Hours of operation: Monday-Saturday 5:00 – 9:00pm.

The Story of ZAMPA

In 1903 William S. Mason purchased the Governor Prescott House in Epping. Almost 100 years later, Cory McPhee, William Mason's great grandson, and his wife, Julie DiTursi, moved to the Governor Prescott House to continue the family legacy. In time, Cory and Julie will share the beauty of the family estate with the public as they open the Governor Prescott House for hosting weddings and special events. But first, Cory and Julie, who share a passion for fine food, wanted to realize their dream of owning a restaurant.

This dream came true in June 2002 when the couple opened the doors of Zampa (pronounced "zahm-pa"). A unique name, you might say. As the couple was searching to name the restaurant, they discovered a way to connect it to the family estate. Inside the Governor Prescott House is a paw print preserved in a brick. The origin is described in this September 21, 1875 article in the Exeter Newsletter discovered by Madelyn Willamson of the Epping Historical Society.

"Epping has good clay pits. When Nathaniel G. and Micah Prescott came to town, and to the place where Hon. Benj. F. Prescott now lives, about one hundred and eighteen years ago, they used brick then or not long after, made in town.

It is a tradition that they were made on their own lands. After some were struck and before being burnt, a dog went over them and in two or three at least, his feet sunk in and the exact footprint was left. After being burnt they remained just the same. These bricks were used in the chimney that begins in the cellar. It is put on one of its edges so that the side with the dog’s footprint is in full view. It may be thought a small matter, but it is an interesting item of old time manners, worth noting."

As a result, Cory and Julie named the restaurant Zampa, the Italian word for "paw”. (Julie is of Italian heritage). The Zampa name has another special meaning for the couple as it symbolizes their astrological sign, Leo the Lion.

D & D Insurance

D & D Insurance was established in 1996 as an agency specializing in truck insurance. With a background as a commercial truck underwriter, I was aware that truck owners needed an agent who knew where to find the best coverage at the lowest available price to fit their unique and individual needs with honest and reliable service. After a few years, I expanded my business to include Home, Auto and all types of Commercial insurance with that same commitment to service.

D & D Insurance is owned and operated by myself, Denise Giroux with the support of my husband, Don. We have lived in Epping for over 30 years. We purchased the little, neglected building on the corner of Main St. and Railroad Ave. in 2003 which we completely renovated DYI style, and it has been the agency’s home ever since.

D & D Insurance represents many different companies and I am always happy to provide comparison quotes on your Home, Auto or Commercial insurance.

A Step Up Bookkeeping Services LLC

A Step Up Bookkeeping Services was founded by Debbie Moulton in 2005. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1990, Debbie worked in the corporate world in various roles, including computer and network support, controller and transitional CFO, and database programming.

She stayed home with her kids for a few years and then took the H&R Block tax course for “something to do”. She had been preparing her own taxes for many years and enjoyed this detailed work. This turned into a part-time job during the tax season. While preparing income taxes her first year, Debbie saw a need for small business owners to have their records organized throughout the year. They were missing many deductions by not keeping accurate track of receipts and cash expenses. Debbie then became certified in QuickBooks and A Step Up Bookkeeping Services was born.

At first, A Step Up was run from Debbie’s home in Epping, and gradually expanded to support small businesses in Epping, Kingston, East Kingston, Raymond, Deerfield, Exeter, Stratham and surrounding towns. A Step Up then added payroll services, including withholding and paid time off calculations and preparation of quarterly forms.

In November of 2008, A Step Up moved into an office location at The Granary Building, 57 Main Street in Epping, across from The Holy Grail. The larger office space now has a dedicated conference and training room, a separate office for Debbie and an office for A Step Up’s two employees – Tina Dixey and Darla Cote.

Debbie Moulton is now an Advanced Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor™, volunteers as the Treasurer of the Friends of Harvey-Mitchell Library and is a member of the Epping Lions. Debbie is a Board Member of the Greater Raymond Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Exeter Area Chamber of Commerce, Association of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB), BNI, Women’s Business Center and several other networking groups.

The mission of A Step Up Bookkeeping Services is to empower small businesses to succeed by relieving them of the details of financial record-keeping, reporting and analysis. Twin Pines Driving Range

Article from Golfsmith Clubmaker

Bill Langdon is a man of action. When he sees a golfer struggling with his golf game, he is quick to come up with a solution. When technology shifts and he needs to learn a new clubmaking procedure or purchase a new tool, he reacts faster than tour-grade shafting epoxy.

The New Hampshire native may wear a shop apron instead of a cape, but his customers think he is super. Interestingly, it was Langdon’s need to play more golf with his dad, Jerry, that led to his thriving club-making business at Twin Pines Driving
Range in Epping, New Hampshire.

“After three years of driving 45 minutes one way to hit golf balls with my dad, we decided to go into business together and start a golf driving range in 1999,” Langdon said.

Today, Langdon’s golfing fortress includes a 1,600 square-foot workshop packed with nearly every clubmaking tool known to man. Since Epping, population 6,200, is no Metropolis, the veteran clubmaker has to rely on word-of-mouth advertising and strategically-placed advertising to attract golfers. Regional television spots during major PGA golf tournaments, sponsorships of 20 to 30 local tournaments annually and a keen sense of community have helped him build an impressive client list.
“It also helps that we own a heated driving range/practice center/repair and fitting shop,” Langdon, the Golf Clubmakers Association’s (GCA) 2005-2006 New Hampshire Clubmaker of the Year, added. “I have many avenues to both promote and
grow my business.”

Throughout the year, Twin Pines holds several golf clinics and gives lessons to area school children at discounted rates. During the summer months, Langdon even offers free weekly golf lessons to approximately 50 kids ranging in ages from eight to 11. While his first goal is to make sure golfers are fitted with the right golf clubs, his second objective is to convert more golfers, especially younger players, to the sport.

Giving back to his community via charitable contributions is also also important to this father of two sons — Christopher and Michael. He gave an estimated $3,000 to charitable organizations in 2005.

My sons have autism so I’m a firm believer that the more you give in time and money, the more you can encourage and help someone who is physically challenged,” Langdon said. “I think my customers also appreciate my motto — the more you give of yourself, the greater the rewards.”

Langdon is also a strong believer in continuing his clubmaking education. He travels to clubmaking conferences and hones his skills by attending advanced club-making schools like Golfsmith’s Master Craftsman School. He also encourages his
customers to better understand the club-making process.

“I try to encourage questions from my customers, and sometimes I even let them install a grip or make a loft or lie adjustment,” he said, “What I enjoy the most about customer participation is that it keeps me on my toes. If I don’t know the answer,
I’ll quickly do some research and get back to them with the answer.”
